UPDATE: After investigating the reports, the men were subcontractors for Duke Energy, according to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office. Utility companies have a backlog of meter readings thanks to inclement weather in January.

HAMILTON COUNTY, Ind. (Feb. 3, 2016) – Hamilton County authorities are warning residents about a pair of utility workers who may not be what they claim, according to a Facebook post from the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office

At least two area residents have reported seeing a work truck with men wearing safety vests on their property. The men stayed for an unusually long amount of time, making residents suspicious.

When asked what they were doing in the area, the men said they were checking meters. Workers for local public utilities wear identification and use marked vehicles, neither of which happened in these cases.

According to Capt. Scott McKinney, the vehicle involved is a red Dodge full-size truck with what was possibly a Kentucky license plate. The workers were described as a white male in his 20s with dark hair; the other was in his 50s with sandy gray hair and glasses. Deputies want to talk to the men to see if they’re legitimate workers or up to something else.

The sheriff’s office said residents should report any suspicious activity, especially if they see anyone matching the men’s descriptions. To report a crime or suspicious activity in Hamilton County, contact Public Safety Communications at 317-773-1282 or call 911 for an emergency.
