MUNCIE, Ind. (Jan. 30, 2016) — A Summitville man dies after falling through ice in Delaware County.

The accident happened Friday on a private pond in the area of State Road 67 and State Road 3. Dorsel Goings, 70, was ice fishing when police say he fell through the ice. He was taken by ambulance to Ball Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Indiana DNR said another local resident noticed Goings’ gear laying on the ice with no sign of Goings. She tried calling Goings, and when he didn’t answer, she called 911.

The recovery was a joint effort with the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, Hamilton Fire, Muncie Fire, Delaware County EMS, Indiana State Police, the Eaton Police Department, and the Delaware County Coroner.

Investigators said the ice where Goings went through was roughly two inches thick. Indiana Conservation Officers would like to remind the public not to go out on ice less than four inches thick, and to regularly check the thickness of the ice by drilling holes as you go.
