Woman sentenced to 12 years in 2014 abduction, arson case
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Jan. 22, 2016) – A woman who kidnapped a 1-month-old baby and tried to set an apartment on fire in 2014 learned her punishment Friday.
Desarai Kemp was sentenced to 12 years in the Department of Correction after agreeing to plead guilty in the case. In December 2014, the then 18-year-old Kemp was at the center of a bizarre case in which she abducted a baby from a northwest side apartment, stole a car and tried to set the apartment on fire.
She was initially charged with kidnapping, arson, auto theft and theft. The baby’s family described Kemp as a family friend who’d been staying at the apartment for a few days. When everyone was asleep on Dec. 5, 2014, Kemp tried to set fire to the carpet and a couch. She then took the baby and left.
Police found her about eight miles from the original location. She told investigators the fire was supposed to be a “distraction” so she could get away with the infant.
