INDIANAPOLIS (Jan. 22, 2016) – Police are investigating after a student was shot at Lawrence Central High School Friday night.

The shooting was reported around 9:30 p.m. Lawrence police said a 15-year-old male was shot in the leg outside the gym. The shooting victim was taken to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health with non-life-threatening injuries. Police said an argument may have started inside the building and spilled outside, resulting in the shooting.

Lawrence Central hosted Warren Central for a basketball game. Capt. Gary Woodruff with Lawrence police said there were several law enforcement officers at the school for the game.

"The game was still in progress," said Woodruff. "Initially people were there in the gym and then they were asked to leave eventually."

Lawrence Township Schools released the following statement about the shooting:

This evening just before 9:30 PM, shots were fired outside of the gymnasium at Lawrence Central High School as the basketball game against Warren Central concluded. A 15-year-old student from Lawrence Central was shot in the leg and was immediately taken to the hospital. The scene was secured by the authorities and fans were evacuated from the gymnasium. Police believe they have identified a potential suspect. Our first concern is for the safety and well-being of students, their families, and those impacted by the events of this evening.

This incident is not a reflection of the outstanding students of Lawrence Central High School, but of an individual who has no respect for our community or our schools. The MSD of Lawrence township has established a safety plan and lockdown procedures that contribute to, and maintain a safe environment for our students. Security was on campus at the time of the event, both inside and out, and was able to immediately respond to the situation.

In the wake of this event, school personnel will be reviewing all information from the police and will work to assure that our students and families will be safe in the future.
