DANVILLE, Ohio (Jan. 18, 2016) – An Ohio police officer died in the line of duty late Sunday night.
According to the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, the man was identified as Thomas Cottrell. His body was found behind the Danville Municipal building just before midnight, reports WJW.
The Knox County Sheriff’s Office said dispatchers received a call around 11:20 p.m. from a woman who said Danville police officers were in danger. The woman claimed her ex-boyfriend, Herschel Jones III, left with weapons and wanted to kill a police officer.
Dispatchers tried to contract Cottrell to warn him, but their attempts proved unsuccessful. Deputies found his body outside the police station.
Jones was seen running from a house on East Washington Street around 1:30 a.m. Monday and was taken into custody after a short chase.
Police interviewed a woman who was outside the house that Jones ran from. She was later released.
The Danville Police Department includes seven officers.
