INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Jan. 8, 2016) -- Early preparations were underway Friday for the possible first snowstorm of winter, expected to hit this weekend.

"Right now we’ve got plenty of time to think ahead," Capt. Mike Pruitt, with the Wayne Township Fire Department, said.

Thinking ahead and planning ahead is what Pruitt and other emergency responders hope everyone will do, since we've become accustomed to a winter without snow.

"It’s like our first day ever seeing snow," Pruitt said.

He expected crews to be extra busy on Sunday as people who aren't used to the weather try to go about their usual business.

It seems like a simple reminder, but Pruitt said in particular you should be careful if you go outside or get in and out of your car, as slip and falls can be one of the biggest issues on a first snow day.

At Benchmark Property Services on the west side, Chase Mattox and his team were on the opposite side: hoping it snows quite a bit. The snow removal service has yet to actually remove any snow this winter.

"It’s hard to keep everything working when there’s no snow. ... We’ve had to really exhaust all our resources to find other work," Mattox said.

They need at least two inches of snow to plow, so for now they are getting ready.

"Everybody’s on standby," Mattox said.

In the meantime, Pruitt suggests you make your own preparations, like packing your car with an emergency kit, making sure you are using safe heating sources, and thinking winter even if you'd rather not.

"We’ve been a little spoiled so far with a mild winter," Pruitt said.
