IPS suspends Crispus Attucks boys’ basketball coach
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Jan. 8, 2016)– Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) says the Crispus Attucks boys’ basketball coach has been suspended from the school, pending an Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) investigation.
According to IHSAA Commissioner Bobby Cox, eligibility hearings were held last month concerning two basketball players who were transferring from Anderson to Crispus Attucks.
Cox says coach Phil Washington violated rules when the two athletes participated in summer activities before being enrolled. They were ruled ineligible.
As a result, IPS suspended Washington and the IHSAA placed the Crispus Attucks basketball program on probation.
IPS issued the following statement:
“Mr. Washington was suspended from Crispus Attucks pending an internal investigation related to an IHSAA investigation. The district took this measure to ensure continued eligibility of our student athletes in the Crispus Attucks Boys’ Basketball program. IPS does not speak to the specifics of personnel matters, but can confirm Mr. Washington will continue to serve the students of IPS in another capacity.”
