INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Dec. 17, 2015) — A group of Indianapolis women who use Facebook to organize Christmas donations have adopted 25 families, many impacted by the city’s rising violence.

The group, who call their cause ‘The Christmas Blessing,’ was started a few years ago by Johnetta McGowan. Through Facebook posts, she began adopting families for Christmas who needed some extra help.

“We just try to lift them up a little bit,” McGowan said.

The adoptions have grown to include many donors, allowing for 25 families to be served this year, including 75 children. The women collected clothes, toys and food for a Christmas dinner.

“Sometimes people think the community doesn’t care. It’s a whole slew of people in the community that care (and) we have so many people that jump in and help us,” volunteer Stephanie Andrews said.

This year the group reached out to Ten Point Coalition and IMPD’s Victim Assistance unit to find families impacted by violence and the rising homicide rate.

“The crime rate is up, the murder rate is up and so I figured we’d focus on homicide families and see what we can do,” McGowan said.

This year’s event will be held on Saturday, with families receiving their gifts and food items, along with a visit from Santa.

The women still need some food donations, in particular hams and turkeys for families. You can drop off those items on Friday at Partner Linx Staffing or contact the group through Facebook at the link here.
