BARTHOLOMEW COUNTY, Ind. (Dec. 10, 2015) – A cheese truck from Wisconsin caught fire on I-65 in Bartholomew County Wednesday night, closing the interstate for several hours.

According to the German Township Volunteer Fire Department, the driver stopped on southbound I-65 north of U.S. 31 after seeing smoke coming from his steering wheel. The driver told fire officials he’d picked up a load of liquid cheese in barrels from Wisconsin when he first saw the smoke. The call came in before 8:30 p.m.

The driver then saw flames coming from the wheels and blew a tire. He stopped the truck to find smoke coming from inside the trailer. He quickly unhitched his cab from the trailer to keep it from catching fire as well.

Fire crews stayed at the scene until about 10:30 p.m. and returned two hours later to clean the cheese off the road. The interstate reopened around 1:30 a.m.
