ASPEN, Colo. (Dec. 8, 2015) – He’s been down on his luck for several years now, but things are certainly looking up for a Colorado man.

Michael Engfors, 60, has struggled with alcoholism, a divorce and the loss of his business. He’s been homeless for more than six years, reports KUSA.

Now, he’s $500,000 richer after buying a $10 scratch-off lottery ticket on Friday that turned out to be a winner. After verifying his good fortune, Engfors returned to Saint Mary Catholic Church to spend a final weekend sleeping on the floor and share the news with some friends there.

“I asked him what he was gonna do, and he said he wanted to get some skis and he really wanted to connect with his daughter who he hadn’t seen in over 20 years,” Jeremy Kowalis with the Aspen Homeless Shelter told KUSA. “He’s interested in trying to find out how to go about reaching her and re-connecting with her, now that he’s got a little bit more means to do so.”

Kowalis said Engfors has seen life’s ups and downs and knew his luck would eventually change.

“I don’t think he normally spends $10 a day on a lottery ticket. But he did that day, and it sure paid off.”
