INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Dec. 3, 2015)-- Just hours after the mass shooting in San Bernardino California, authorities in Indianapolis are increasing patrols ahead of the Big Ten Football Championship Game this weekend.

“You will see our mounted officers, you will see our traffic officers, you will see uniformed officers. What you will not see are the undercover operations that occur,” says IMPD Officer Chris Wilburn.

Downtown Indianapolis will be flooded with crowds, from Michigan and Iowa. As fans pack into Lucas Oil Stadium, which is sold out for Saturday’s game. This is the fifth time Indianapolis has hosted the BIG TEN Championship game and law enforcement says they are prepared to handle the crowds.

After recent attacks, in the United States and around the world, there will be a heightened state of awareness to protect soft targets like stadiums and restaurants.

“We will communicate with you when there is a threat and we want you to tell us about the immediate threats in your surroundings,” says Officer Wilburn.

Communication between the general public and authorities is key. Police want everyone to watch out of suspicious activity and report it right away. Experts say that information can help prevent another tragedy or mass shooting.

“If you see something please let us know. If you look at what happened in San Bernardino, there was a reluctance on the part of the neighbors to get involved. You have to help us so we can help you,” says Jim White Public Safety Lecturer at IUPUI.

As law enforcement prepares for the Big TEN Championship, you should also have a plan to get to safety in case of an emergency.

“You should know where the exits are, know how to get out, and how to make contact with your relatives. Again, it is just a little preplanning that all of us do not think about until after,” says White.
