HENRY COUNTY, Ind. (December 1, 2015) – A New Castle man confessed to police Monday for committing an armed robbery after his conscience got the best of him.

Friday, November 27, the New Castle Police Department reported an armed robbery at the BP gas station at the corner of Ind. 3 and Indiana Avenue around 9:15 p.m. According to Henry County Sheriff Ric McCorkle, a man allegedly entered the convenience store, showed a handgun, and demanded money. He stole approximately $780.

On Monday, Alen Melton voluntarily walked into the Henry County jail and turned himself in. He also brought in a plastic bag filled with money to return to the gas station.

“He said his conscience bothered him so badly that he had to turn himself in to us this morning,” McCorkle said. “He said he was confessing to an armed robbery. Couldn’t live with it anymore, would have been in sooner, but he had to wait until he had an opportunity to talk to wife because he couldn’t live with it.”

According to McCorkle, Melton has no previous criminal history. He is currently being housed in the Henry County Jail, charged with the robbery.
