WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Nov. 20, 2015) — A sculpture of a 12-foot pencil that disappeared from Purdue University earlier this week has been found.

According to the university, someone saw the pencil lying in the grass at Slayter Center around 8 a.m. Thursday and contacted Purdue police. The pencil, made of cedar wood and weighing about 200 pounds, wasn’t damaged, university officials said. It will go to Purdue’s carpentry shop, where crews will prepare it for re-installation at Pickett Park.

“It appears that whoever took it saw the media coverage and decided to get it out of their possession,” said Lt. detective Carrie Costello with the Purdue Police Department.

A library staff member reported the sculpture missing Monday.
