INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – A Thanksgiving staple will not be served at the annual Mozel Sanders Thanksgiving Dinner this year.

Turkey has been pulled from the menu and will be replaced with pulled chicken.

Organizers blame the Avian flu outbreak that hit the poultry industry hard earlier this year.

“We could not get enough turkey,” said Foundation President Stephanie Sanders-Young.

Purdue experts predict the Avian flu will also have an impact on your wallet when you buy a turkey at the store this year.

The school’s agricultural economist Corrine Alexander expects a whopping 15% to 20% jump in the price of a turkey. To put that in perspective, last year we were paying $1.14 per pound of turkey. This year, you can expect to pay up to $1.37 a pound.

Even without turkeys, the Mozel Sanders Foundation promises to serve a satisfying meal.

“You won’t be able to tell the difference. It’s white meat. And it’s pulled. It’s chicken. The flavor is good,” said Sanders-Young. “That’s what we’re gonna have along with the dressing and gravy. You’ll think it’s turkey and dressing.”

Time is winding down for the big dinner. The Foundation still needs volunteers, delivery trucks, and drivers to transport food to 40 satellite locations.

They also need money. The Foundation distributes 35,000 meals during the holiday season and it takes $4.50 to fee one person.
