INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (October 26, 2015) -- Two people were sent to the hospital after a fire on the city’s west side.
It happened just after 4:30 this morning in the 7300 block of Rockleigh Avenue. Firefighters pulled a 40-year-old man out of the building and say he was taken to Eskenzi in critical condition. A 56-year-old woman was able to escape through a window — she was taken to Eskenzi in serious condition due to smoke inhalation.
Wayne Township Fire Captain Michael Pruitt says the victims' relationship is unclear at this time, but both were inside the unit when fire happened. Another family was on the other side of the duplex and they were able to escape.
Firefighters say they were able to respond fast and look for the man who was still inside.
"They pulled the individual from the home within minutes after arrival, so it was a quick knockdown on the fire and a quick removal of that individual who was trapped,” Pruitt said.
Pruitt says the duplex had working smoke detectors. Crews are investigating the cause of the fire.
