INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Oct. 23, 2015) -- Indianapolis Metropolitan police arrested a man after a fire that killed an Indianapolis man Thursday morning.
IMPD said Jean Claude Brown, 26, faces murder and arson charges in connection with the fire in the 3600 block of East New York Street. Police said Brown set fire to the building in an act of revenge.
"I can tell you that video surveillance played a key role in terms of determining a potential suspect," said Sgt. Kendale Adams with IMPD.
Fire crews were called around 3:20 a.m. Thursday to find a duplex on fire. Indianapolis Fire Department crews said Ralph Chew, 44, was trapped inside. Crews rescued him, and he was taken to Eskenazi Hospital. Chew died Thursday, according to the Marion County Coroner's Office. Four other people escaped.
IMPD and IFD said Thursday night that they had opened an arson investigation into the fire. A crime scene van was parked at the home on Friday and investigators used a dog to search for evidence.
"I'm very glad that they found the guy who did it and I hope he gets what he deserves," said Rebecca Harvey, the victim's cousin.
