INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Oct. 23, 2015) - The Marion County Sheriff's Department is checking in on registered sex offenders making sure they are where they're supposed to be.
Halloween is next weekend and the sheriff's department wants to make sure your kids are safe in your neighborhood. Part of that is making sure registered sex offenders have the correct address and updated information. CBS4 rode along with sheriff's deputies are they went door to door checking in on sex offenders.
The more than 1,000 current offenders live all throughout Marion County.
“We have everything from homeless to offenders who make lots of money and live up in the Geist area," said Sgt. Andy Dalstrom.
Deputies ask the offenders for updated information and take new pictures each month.
“People’s looks change all the time. A lot of these offenders who have permanent addresses are required to register yearly and a lot can change in a year," Sgt. Dalstrom said.
When deputies do sex offender checks, they input the offenders name into a national crime database before arriving at the home. The database shows if the offenders have new charges or if they have warrants for their arrest.
That was the case with one offender, Aaron Birdwell. Deputies showed up at his house to do the monthly check and placed him under arrest. He had a warrant for violating his probation. The probation was initially set after he failed to register as a sex offender. Birdwell is required to register as a sex offender after being convicted of child solicitation.
Right now, there's more than 70 sex offenders in Marion County with warrants for failing to register. Deputies are constantly looking for those offenders and checking in on others.
“It’s important for us to stay on top of where these guys are at and make sure that they’re honest about where they register that they live," said Sgt. Dalstrom.
