INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (October 23, 2015) -- Police said a driver fled from a traffic stop at Tuxedo Drive and drove his car into Brookside Park, where he crashed the car into a body of water and fled the scene early Friday morning.
Police confirm that they had pulled over the car on the city's near east side just before 5 a.m. Friday. The driver, identified later as 29-year-old William Cox, took off, running two red lights and going down an embankment at Brookside Park. His car ended up in a body of water and he ran off as he tried to evade police.
Police found Cox and arrested him a short time later. He told officers they had the wrong person; officers responded that he was soaking wet and the car that went down the embankment was registered to him.
Police found a rifle in his car and said Cox was carrying $2,300 in cash. A regular tow truck couldn't pull the car out, and a truck with a boom had to be called in to retrieve the vehicle.
Preliminary charges against Cox include driving on a suspended license and leaving the scene of a crash.
