New Ohio River bridge between Indiana, Kentucky expected to open before Christmas
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Oct. 12, 2015) – The new Ohio River bridge between Louisville and southern Indiana will open earlier than expected, according to Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear.
Beshear didn’t provide a concrete date for the bridge’s opening, but said he expected it to open before Christmas, according to WLKY. Beshear said the project is ahead of schedule and on budget.
Plans are in the works for a public celebration ahead of the official opening, Beshear said.
Construction on the bridge began with the groundbreaking in June 2013. The public will have a chance to walk across the new bridge before it opens to traffic.
The new bridge will carry two-way traffic temporarily as crews continue work on the adjacent Kennedy Bridge that carries Interstate 65 traffic across the Ohio River. The Kennedy Bridge will shut down for about six months as a result before reopening in phases.
