Calls from public help Bartholomew County deputies get drunk driver off roads

BARTHOLOMEW COUNTY, Ind. (September 28, 2015) – Bartholomew County deputies were able to catch a drunk driver thanks to the public’s help.

On September 26, at approximately 1:30 p.m., the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office received several calls about an impaired driver.

Sgt. James Stevens, was advised that a black Pontiac Grand Am, north bound on US 31 from 475 South, had rear-ended a vehicle at the traffic light at 400 South and then continued on US 31.

Sgt. Stevens located the Grand Am and observed it almost driving off the road then veering to the center of the roadway. The Grand Am turned east onto 100 South, almost running off the road again.

Sgt. Stevens initiated a traffic stop and the driver then drove completely off the roadway before stopping.

Upon making contact with the driver, identified as Willie F. Patton, 61, of Columbia, Kentucky, Sgt. Stevens immediately detected the odor of alcohol.

Patton was transported to Columbus Regional Hospital before being transported to the Bartholomew County Jail.  Sgt. Stevens found a small amount of marijuana on Patton as well as a burnt marijuana cigarette.

Patton was transported to the Bartholomew County Jail for operating while intoxicated and possess of marijuana.
