INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Sept. 22, 2015) – An internal investigation is underway at the Indiana Women’s Prison after an inmate was found dead in an apparent suicide.

Princola D. Shields, 20, was serving a year for battery, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct in a case out of Johnson County. She was due to be released from the facility at 2596 N. Girls School Rd. on Oct. 15, 2015, according to prison officials.

Shields was found unresponsive in her cell around 3:20 p.m. Monday and taken to Eskenazi Hospital, where she died Tuesday morning.

Her death in custody marks the third such case linked to suicide since August.

Over the weekend, gymnastics coach Marvin L. Sharp was found dead in the Marion County Jail. He was being held on charges of sexual misconduct with a minor and child molesting. Authorities raided his home on Aug. 24.

In late August, Michael Morris was found dead in Marion County Lockup, where he was being held on several felony charges. Morris was accused of stabbing his wife and then hitting multiple people in a series of hit-and-runs in downtown Indianapolis.
