UPDATE (September 19, 2015) -- Muncie police have arrested a male juvenile who is allegedly the toddlers brother in connection to the shooting. Specifics about the arrest have not yet been made public. Officials say the three year old is recovering at Riley Hospital and is in critical but stable condition.

MUNCIE, Ind. (Sept. 18, 2015)-- The Muncie Police Department is investigating the shooting of a 3-year-old girl. The child is in critical but stable condition Friday night at an Indianapolis hospital, according to Muncie Police Chief Steve Stewart.

Officers responded to the 700 block of South Elm Street after a call came into the 911 center just before 5:30 p.m. The shooting appears to be accidental, Stewart said.

However, neighbors who knew the victim well were concerned to hear the news.  Dawneen Peterson has three children and lives four houses down from where the shooting happened.

"What if the other kids were just out in in the yard and the gun went off?" Peterson said. "It could have been any one of these children."

Sherri Bennett just moved to the neighborhood and said she didn't hear the gunshot, but came outside when police surrounded the house.

“I don’t know what they were doing, but find out who had the gun or how the gun got in the house,” said Bennett.
