Excessive overgrowth delays fire crews battling fire
BARTHOLOMEW COUNTY, Ind. (September 12, 2015)–It took German Township fire crews 45 minutes to remove overgrown trees to give their firetrucks access to a burning house Friday.
Fire crews were called shortly before 4:30 p.m. to the 6300 block of of North US 31 for a structure fire.
As crews arrived they could see heavy smoke pouring from the two-story house.
Overgrown trees blocked access to the driveway. Extra departments responded to the scene with brush trucks and chain saws to clear a path to the burning house.
Fire crews searched the vacant house for possible squatters and then battled the flames from outside the structure.
The property care-takers arrived on the scene and gave firefighters permission to allow the structure to burn.
The property was scheduled for demolition within a week.
Approximately 45 firefighters remained on the scene until 10 p.m. A couple of crews stayed until 1 a.m. to make sure the fire did not spread to nearby trees.
Damage has been estimated at $500,000. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
