INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Sept. 11, 2015) – New details were released Friday about a deadly shooting involving Indiana State Police.

The shootout at the Eagle Pointe Apartments on the city’s northwest side Thursday left one man dead and a trooper injured Thursday afternoon.

State police say it all started with a drug investigation.

Investigators say a trooper Michael Wright  approached a man who had only recently come under surveillance, when the suspect allegedly flashed a gun and tried to run away.

The trooper chased the suspect through the complex when police say Brandon Foy turned and shot at Wright, hitting him in the hand. The trooper shot back, killing the suspect on the spot.

Trooper Wright is third from the left.

Trooper Wright is a graduate of Decatur Central High School and he served two tours in Iraq according to Indiana State Police.

Wright graduated from the  73rd Indiana State Police Recruit Academy in 2014.

It turns out the investigation into Foy was less than two days old and troopers did not know Foy’s true identity when they approached him.

According to court records, the suspect has a history of gun violence and was accused of assaulting both his mother and girlfriend last year, threatening both victims with a gun. The suspect had active warrants stemming from that case.

The trooper injured in the shooting had been on the job since 2014. He is expected to have surgery on his hand and once recovered he’ll be allowed to return to active duty.

“People need to know that the taking of any life is unfortunate, but we don’t go out looking to take life. It’s the circumstances presented to us. It’s all about complying with lawful order of police officer,” said Indiana State Police Capt. Dave Bursten.

During the investigation, state police say they also found a second weapon inside the suspects pocket.
