MADISON COUNTY, Ind. (September 6, 2015) – A Madison County woman faces DUI and child neglect charges.

On Saturday at approximately 8:00 p.m. the Madison County Sheriff’s Department was dispatched to the area of County Road 500 North and County Road 300 East to investigate a property damage accident.

At the scene, the investigating deputy observed a Blue 2000 GMC Jimmy off the side of the road.

While speaking with the driver Jennifer Karkosky, 26, of Anderson, she advised the deputy she and the children were on their way home from swimming.

Karkosky says she attempted to turn around and when she backed up onto County Road 500 North she backed up off of the side of the road. Her vehicle bottomed out and then slid off the side of the road, leaving the vehicle at a 45 Degree angle with the front end in the air.

Officers smelled alcohol on Karkosky’s breath, and she told them she had three beers earlier.

A breathalyzer showed Karosky’s BAC was .16, twice the legal limit.

She was arrested on these charges:

  • 1 count operating while intoxicated previous convictions: minor passenger in the vehicle, a level 6 felony
  • 8 counts of neglect of a dependent child, a level 6 felony
  • 1 count driving on a suspended driver’s license

Karkosky was transporting eight children between the ages of three to 12-years-old in her vehicle at the time of the accident

Two of the children were her children, and according to Karosky she was in the process of trying to obtain custody of three of the children.

The other two children were friends of the family.

Three of the children were released to Department of Child Services, and the other five were released to family members.

Richmond Township Fire Department was called to the scene of the accident to make sure there were no injuries to the children prior to being turned over to their parents and DCS.
