Indianapolis, Ind ( September 5, 2015) - For many people in central Indiana, the Labor Day holiday weekend means celebrating out on the water.

From the Ohio River to Lake Michigan, Conservation Officers are out in force this weekend making sure boaters are wearing life jackets, using caution in busy areas and have a sober driver behind the wheel.

The state Department of Natural Resources says so far this year, people are being safer on Indiana’s waterways.

The DNR’s Law Enforcement Division says, in 2014, 59 people drowned in open waters across the state. There have been 31 so far this year.

As for boating while intoxicated arrests… that number is also down from 133 last year compared to 61 this year.

“Education is a huge part of our job just as much as enforcement and between education and enforcement hopefully we can continue to drop those numbers even lower," says Officer Brad Robins.

The DNR has produced these boating safety videos and are encouraging people to watch them before heading out on the water.
