Lafayette high school teacher sentenced to eight years on child seduction charges
UPDATE: Robinson was sentenced on August 7 for a total of eight years. He will serve five years at the Indiana Department of Corrections and three years on supervised probation.
LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Jan. 12, 2015) – A Lafayette high school teacher and assistant football coach is accused of having sex with a student.
Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Department arrested 37-year-old Jake Robinson at McCutcheon High School on Friday afternoon.
Robinson was arrested on charges of child seduction.
The 16-year-old victim told detectives that she and Robinson had been having sexual encounters since October. The most recent encounter was last week.
Detectives uncovered this alleged text conversation on the victim’s phone:
Victim: “:) love you.” and “omg last night was so fun.”
Robinson: “Yes. Lol. I was just daydreaming about when you…”
FOX59 decided not to include the rest of Robinson’s text because of the graphic content.
“Anytime you have horrific situations that would be detrimental to the youth in our community and professionals we trust our children with it is quite alarming and disturbing,” explains Sheriff Barry Richard, with Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Office.
FOX59 did talk to one McCutcheon parent who didn’t want to go on camera but did say she has two daughters at the high school and both were shocked when Robinson was arrested. The parent’s daughters called Robinson a “good teacher.”
Tippecanoe County School Officials released this statement:
“Due to the serious and troubling nature of the allegations, the Tippecanoe School Corporation immediately placed Jake Robinson on paid administrative leave, pending the outcome of the investigation. During this time, McCutcheon High School has hired a substitute teacher so that Robinson will not be on school property or around students. TSC is cooperating with law enforcement and is conducting its own internal investigation.
Robinson is a PE teacher and assistant varsity football coach. He has been with the TSC since 2006.
Robinson’s next court appearance is Wednesday.
