LAFAYETTE, Ind. (July 20, 2015)– A woman accused of leaving an infant in a parked car outside a Lafayette Walmart in June was charged Friday with neglect of a dependent.

Officers responded to the Walmart at 2347 Veterans Memorial Parkway on June 3 after receiving a report of an unattended child. Officers arrived and a woman told them she heard a baby crying inside the car. She believed the child had been in there for about 20 minutes before she called police.

The child, less than a year old, was rescued by an officer who noted that the infant’s skin was warm to the touch. The infant’s forehead and shirt were damp with sweat. The temperature outside that day was 77 degrees.

The child was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital East for treatment.

Almost an hour after police were called to the scene, Kiya R. Harris, 23, and others exited the store and went to the vehicle. As they began to drive away, an officer stopped the car to notify them what had happened to the child. Harris was arrested on June 3.
