SOUTH BEND, Ind. (June 3, 2015) – The lead suspect in the Richmond Hill explosion case is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday morning for his final preliminary hearing. Mark Leonard is accused of masterminding the 2012 explosion that leveled an Indianapolis house, killed two people and caused millions of dollars in damage.
Leonard is set to appear in St. Joseph County Superior Court at 10:30 a.m. Jury selection is expected to begin Thursday and opening statements on Monday. Leonard is the first of five co-conspirators to stand trial.
The trial comes more than 2 ½ years after the natural gas explosion on the south side of Indianapolis. Investigators say the blast was part of a failed insurance fraud scheme.
Leonard faces charges of murder, arson and conspiracy to commit arson. If convicted, he could end up in jail for life without parole.
