INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (May 26, 2015) - Officials are preparing for severe weather this week, with the biggest threat being straight line winds and lightning.

The Indianapolis Division of Homeland Security can send out a tornado siren at just the click of a button. The siren will also alert for the threat of straight line winds.

"If the straight lined winds start getting up into the range of tornadic style winds," said Gary Coons, Chief of Homeland Security.

Coons said downtown Indianapolis can act like a tunnel for winds, creating a dangerous situation if people don't seek shelter.

“You need to get in and get shelter pretty quickly. We’ve seen too many injuries of people not seeking shelter fast enough," Coons said.

Paying attention to the forecast is another important part of a severe weather plan. Coons said if you're outside playing sports, look at the radar and know where the closest shelter is.

“If you can hear the thunder and you can see the lightning, you’re too close," Coons said.
