DELAWARE COUNTY, Ind. (May 4, 2015)- A tradition at a central Indiana fair could be cancelled over animal cruelty concerns.

An online petition posted on Change.org wants the Delaware County Fair Board to cancel the hog wrestling event.  The petition claims hog wrestling promotes animal cruelty.

“It’s a really, really fun event.  The kids love it. I let my grandsons do it,” said Pam McCammon, a Delaware County Fair board member.

Hog wrestling is when a four person team is timed as they try to catch a pig and place the pig in a barrel in the middle of a muddy pit.

The Delaware County Fair has held a hog wrestling event for at least the past five years. Teams pay a fee to participate and spectators must buy tickets for the event at the grandstand.  Cancelling the event would be a financial hit.

“It goes into the fair and helps the fair and it makes good money. It does really well,” said McCammon.

The petition was posted four days ago and it has more than 20,000 supporters.

Heather from Oklahoma commented, “I will never understand humans need to terrorize animals for amusement. Please stop this.”

Susan from Indianapolis posted, “I’m signing because this is cruelty in the worst way! How dare you think it is ok to slam these poor creatures into the ground as a form of entertainment!”

“Anybody that knows a pig knows they squeal. They squeal over everything. You move them from one fence to another they sequel, it’s just the nature of the animal. So, it sounds like they are getting hurt, but they are not,” said McCammon.

Each year a farmer from southern Indiana brings the hogs.

“He isn’t going to let them be injured. He isn’t going to let their ears be pulled. He really monitors the pigs,” said McCammon.

The board is aware of the petition and the controversy.

“We are listening and we are going to see what our next step will be. We don’t have an answer right now, but we are looking into it,” said McCammon.

The Delaware County Fair Board is planning to have a meeting this week.  A decision will be made whether or not to cancel the hog wrestling event.

The fair is at the end of July.
