NEW YORK (May 4, 2015) — New York’s police commissioner says a police officer who was shot in the head over the weekend has died.
Brian Moore died today at a hospital in Queens with his family at his bedside — including his police officer father, uncle and cousin.
Moore was shot Saturday evening while trying to stop a man who was suspected of carrying a handgun. He and his partner were in plainclothes and in an unmarked car, when police say they pulled up next to Demetrius Blackwell and exchanged words with him. They say Blackwell suddenly turned, pulled a weapon and fired at least twice.
Blackwell has already been charged with attempted murder, and prosecutors say he will now be charged with first-degree murder.
Moore is the third New York City officer to be killed on duty in five months. Two uniformed officers were shot at close range as they sat in a patrol car in December.
Police Commissioner William Bratton says he was an “exceptional young officer” who had earned meritorious service medals.
