ANDERSON, Ind. (April 16, 2016) -- A serial robber caught and linked to dozens of cities this week made a critical mistake on camera, officers say.

CBS4 obtained video from a robbery at the Check 'n Go in Anderson on February 27. Police believe it shows Jeffery Wilson, Jr., 32, in one of the 24 robberies he's suspected of committing since 2013.

In the surveillance video, an employee is cleaning up five minutes before closing time when a man comes in through the front door holding a gun. You then see him grab cash out of a drawer and talk to the employee behind the counter.

"He’s pacing, I think, initially. He hadn’t made the decision yet as to whether he wanted to wait around," Anderson Police Sgt. Chad Boynton said.

That's because the safe inside is on a 10 minute delay. Surprisingly, the man opts to lock the front door and stick around to wait.

Boynton said that was a giveaway to investigators that this was not his first heist.

"It was brazen," Boynton said.

In all, he spends around 12 minutes inside the store. There's even another customer who comes up at one point, hoping to get inside. The employee makes a daring move by indicating he wait '10 minutes' with her hands up in the air, hoping he'd get the hint that something was wrong.

"She was doing so with the intention of alerting him to the fact that she was being held up," Boynton said.

In the end, the man ends up leaving the store before the safe opens. On his way out, though, he makes a critical mistake. He starts to take off his mask and the camera catches a shot of his face- leading to the tip that investigators say broke the case wide open.

Wilson remains in a Marion County jail cell, awaiting formal charges. He is expected to be charged federally because of the ten cities his crimes stretch across.
