INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (April 16, 2015) – A man died early Thursday morning after he was shot multiple times near 46th Street and Carrollton. Relatives say he was killed while at his uncle’s home.

“When they started pulling the yellow tape out, that’s when I realized someone had lost their life,” said neighbor Pam Smithson.

The shooter has not been caught. On Thursday afternoon, police identified the victim as Jimmy Baxter, 20, of Indianapolis. Friends and family refer to Baxter as “Pappy.”

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) officers were called to the scene at 12:10 a.m. on a report of shots fired. Officers found Baxter in the 800 block of 46th Street and EMS pronounced him dead at the scene.

“Bullets  do stray and if I’m sitting in my living room, a bullet could have shot me in the head,” said Smithson.

Homicide detectives spent four hours canvassing the neighborhood, talking to neighbors and family members.

“As neighbors it does anger us,” said Terry Bowdell.

Bowdell is an active member of the neighborhood.

“It makes us more vigilant in regards to making sure we are paying attention to who is walking down the street and driving by in cars,” said Bowdell.

The Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency processed the crime scene, collecting any evidence they could find.
