INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (February 25, 2015) – What you put in your dog’s food bowl is supposed to make them healthy, not hurt them. Earlier this month, a California man filed a federal lawsuit against Purina Petcare claiming the Beneful dry kibble dog food killed his dog. More than 3,000 other pet owners have submitted complaints as well.

“We want to make sure the things we are doing for them are the safest things that we can,” said Dr. Tracey Gillespie, with Indy Vet.

Fortunately, Gillespie hasn’t had to help any sick dogs linked the dog food, but she says it’s important to watch how your dog reacts to whatever food you choose. If your dog shows symptoms longer than a day it could be a problem.

“Your classic symptoms are just like they would be in people; vomiting and diarrhea would be high on the list. Depending on what is wrong with the food, there are cases where you could see other problems, like kidney problems even liver problems although they aren’t common,” Gillespie said.

Purina Petcare is defending itself. The company has called the lawsuit “baseless” and has assured customers “there are no quality issues with Beneful.”
