TRAFALGAR, Ind. (Feb. 8, 2015) -- Johnson County detectives are looking for whoever is responsible for blowing up two mailboxes. The blasts happened outside homes on County Road 525 South and County Road 200 West late Friday night and early Saturday morning. The blasts were so strong they tore the mailboxes to shreds.

Thomas Ferry still has the pieces that he says were scattered everywhere.

"I walked to this neighbor just to see if he had seen anything or heard anything and he said, 'No, but what's that thing out in my yard'," Ferry said as he pointed out another part of his mailbox that was in his neighbor's front yard.

The underside of the mailbox was all that was left, and it shows the blast marks from explosion that happened while he and his wife watched Friday night TV.

"Based on the programming it would have been about 8:30, I heard a nice big loud boom," Ferry recalled. "I'm sure it was just a kid and they were having lot of fun."

A couple of miles away, Keigan McTarsney was woken up by a similar blast.

"It just kinda sounded like a really loud bang," McTarsney explained. "And it scared me, and I had a tear running down my face and I was really mad about it."

Her mailbox was also torn up and twisted from the blast.

Mailboxes are considered federal property and federal law makes it a crime to vandalize them. If convicted, you could face $250,000 fine and jail time.

If you have information on mailbox vandalism, call the Postal Inspection Service to report it. You may provide your information or complaints to your local postmaster or your nearest Postal Inspector. You can also call the Johnson County Sheriff's Office.
