CINCINNATI, OH (January 28, 2015) – A West Virginia mother is accused of deliberately making her 9-year-old son sick by injecting feces into his intravenous line at a Cincinnati hospital.

Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters says 35-year-old Candida Fluty, of Kermit, West Virginia, was indicted Tuesday in Cincinnati on two counts of felonious assault and two counts of child endangering.

According to WCPO, Cincinnati police arrested Fluty at Children’s Hospital Medical Center on January 17th after she “knowingly injected a substance into the victim’s peripheral IV line” in his hospital room the day before.

WCPO found this Facebook post from Fluty dated Friday, January 16th. The text reads: “It never gets easier!!! He made me cry today as well as a few others in the OR. As he was drifting asleep with the mask on his little face, he said I love you Mama, I don’t know what I’d do without you!!! My heart melted. He has that effect on me. Surgery should be about 3 hours!!”

Fluty and her son traveled 190 miles to Children’s Hospital Medical Center because they specialize in providing care to children with chronic and rare diseases.

Deters says the boy suffers from Hirschsprung disease – a congenital condition that affects his bowels and makes it difficult for a person to pass stool.

Deters spoke with Bill Cunningham about the case in a radio interview on 700 WLW. According to the interview, Fluty first took her son to the Cincinnati hospital in 2011. Deters says he believes the mother may have a mental condition in which one person makes another person ill for attention. “We don’t believe her intent was to kill the child,” Deters said. “We believe her intent was to make him sick, and she succeeded.” Deters said the boy does suffer from the disease, but his mother’s actions intensified his actions by spiking his fever.

According to WCPO, multiple fundraisers have been held to help Fluty financially due to her son’s illness over the years. Additionally, the boy and his mother received tickets to a Cincinnati Bengals game from the Children’s Hospital in December.

The boy is currently in the custody of West Virginia Children’s Services, and he is living with an aunt.
